Based in Telford, Shropshire, Virgin Balloon Flights was founded by Richard Branson in 1994, following his successful organization of the first hot air balloon crossing of the Pacific. The Virgin Atlantic Flyer was, at that time, the largest hot air balloon ever constructed, boasting a total volume of 2.3 million cubic feet. At the age of 36, Branson and Lindstrand became the first individuals to cross the Atlantic in a hot air balloon, as the Virgin Atlantic Flyer completed the more than 3,000-mile journey in under 32 hours, departing from Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine and landing near Limavady in Northern Ireland.

Next came the Pacific Ocean, a greater challenge that the duo faced in 1991. Lindstrand was once again responsible for constructing the craft, named the 'Virgin Pacific Flyer'. This balloon had a total volume of 2.6 million cubic feet, featuring a metallic outer layer and a basket resembling a space capsule. Branson and Lindstrand launched their venture across the Pacific on January 16, departing from the southern tip of Japan in the early hours. They encountered immediate difficulties when they inadvertently jettisoned a third of their fuel supply. With the Pacific Flyer being too light and unbalanced, it ascended far too high, encountering the jet stream and flying nearly uncontrollably at incredible speeds. However, the balloon sustained its integrity, and Branson and Lindstrand safely landed in the Canadian Northwest Territories, 48 hours after taking off from Japan, coinciding with the day war was declared on Iraq!

Having narrowly escaped his previous dangerous adventure, Branson set his sights on attempting to circle the globe in a hot air balloon! This was the backdrop for the founding of Virgin Balloon Flights in 1994, following the immense publicity surrounding Virgin's record-setting journeys. In 1999, the Breitling Orbiter, which was not a Virgin balloon, became the first hot air balloon to make a successful trip around the world. Just over two years later, Branson sold Virgin Balloon Flights to his skilled pilot Ken Karlstrom, who has continued to advocate for advancements in ballooning technology and expanding into new regions, including operations in Italy.
